Miracles of the Chiropractic Adjustment...

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I've seen a few different conditions. Even though my main focus was neck and back pain, the patient's would often mention other problems that seemed to resolve since undergoing treatment. A couple examples are: a patient being seen for upper and mid-back pain saw their heartburn resolve. Someone with lower back pain saw his foot issue resolve. There have been numerous cases like this... You know what - that individual didn't care how it happened really, just that it was gone!

The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

“Doc, Your Going To Crack Me, Are You?”

As a chiropractor for 13+ years, I am still surprised to see some people are afraid of getting treated with chiropractic because they think there is a chance of bones being broken or some other bodily harm. Or even hear how another doctor says not to get chiropractic because it’s dangerous.

Chiropractic is one of the safest treatments out there. Let’s say someone has an ache in the back. They go to the medicine cabinet and take a pill. Well that medicine doesn’t just go right to the area in pain but goes everywhere in the body. It’s like using an atomic bomb to a whole town to get rid of mice in one house.

The chiropractic adjustments we do are a safe and gentle way to stop a problem or a pain without having to drop that “atomic bomb”, and maybe cause more problems than we started with.

To learn more about our safe, gentle, chiropractic treatments, speak with one of our chiropractors at (860) 633-8756.

The Glastonbury Chiropractor is located in central Connecticut- CT Spine and Disc Center specializes in patients who suffer from sciatica, disc degeneration, bulging disc or herniated disc in the lumbar spine. For low back pain, neck pain, midback pain, headaches, fibromyalgia and more, chiropractic can help you. Call our Glastonbury office at 860-633-8756 to schedule an appointment and to see if you are a candidate for non surgical spinal decompression.

How Does The Chiropractic Adjustment Give Me Pain Relief?

You see, mobilization gets rid of inflammation. Basically, motion allows inflammation to escape. You may even know someone that hurts when they stay in one position too long. Possibly sitting is painful but getting up and walking feels better. It's all because when we walk, we are moving, and inflammation can better move as well.

Puts things in alignment can also make a significant change. Normal alignment is a position that allows for the best motion an no nerve pressure. The goal of the chiropractic manipulation is exactly that. Restore motion, correct alignment, and therefore reduce pain.

What Is The Difference Between An Adjustment And Manipulation?

Here's on example of an adjustment. An adjustment is a specific manipulation, moving a joint or vertebrae in a particular manner or direction. A manipulation is non-specific; an example would be cracking your knuckles. Chiropractic Doctors are the only ones doing Adjustments! A manipulation will feel good but specific adjustments work much better in the long run...

Gentle Chiropractic Realignment with the Activator Technique

This is another type of instrument adjustment very similar to the activator we use in our Glastonbury Office. The types of adjustments out there may vary but the key is having a trained chiropractor examine and diagnose you.

Visit the doctors of CT Spine & Center to see is they can help you recover from an injury you may have had.

Dr. Oz Talks and Demonstrates the Chiropractic Adjustment

I am a big fan of Dr Oz. Why? Because he is not afraid to show his viewers different methods of pain relief. He doesn't just talk about medications, and surgeries. In this segment he demonstrates a misalignment in the spine, and the chiropractic adjustment. He also shows us what a herniated disc looks like. Also check out the "bird dog", a low back strengthening exercise for the lumbar spine that I show many of my patients. Check it out in the video below:

Diary of a Lifelong Chiropractic Patient

I’ve been going to the chiropractor for my whole life off and on. My parents first took me when I was injured a couple times in sports. We were a typical family, I went to our family physician too. Whenever I got a cold or something I saw our doctor. When I broke my wrist I went to an orthopedist who casted it. I went to the allergist for allergy shots, you name it.

I realized that time and time again from a sports injury or when my mom or dad did something to their neck or back we saw the chiropractor much more than we went to any other doctor. I think by the time I got to college I realized that the reason we went for chiropractic treatment versus going to our family physician was because it made sense. We could either get a prescription for a quick fix, or we could get adjusted and let the body do what it’s supposed to do.

Then I remembered learning one summer that our family physician apparently had type II diabetes. Here was a doctor telling others how to be healthy, what to do to prevent heart problems, diabetes, stay healthy, etc… I liked our family physician a lot; great guy, seemed super smart, generous, happy. But I know type II diabetes was pretty much developed, or man-made, because of poor diet and lifestyle. Our chiropractor on the other hand was also in his 60’s, but if I were to guess at the time I would have said 50. He didn’t have a room full of free sample medication that he would generously give out because he had been given so many from companies, reps, or from seminars that he had attended. He was a super intelligent and generous person as well.
I’m really glad that my parents took me to the chiropractor so I could realize the benefit. My chiropractic experience has truly been a huge benefit to my health and I don’t know how someone can live a full, pain-free, healthy life without one.

Can my Neck Pillow Help with my Chiropractic Manipulations?

Choosing the right neck pillow is important- it can help with cervical alignment
Yes, in fact, a term often used synonymously with “neck pillow” is “chiropractic pillow.” The reason is because a neck pillow helps one hold and restore cervical alignment. This is much like a chiropractic adjustment. The reason the cervical traction neck pillow is recommended by a lot of chiropractors is because it helps align the neck and maintain the neck curvature.

Often when someone is adjusted, especially if they recently had an injury or strain, things may shift back out of place. Therefore, using a neck pillow at night following your adjustment will help to maintain your alignment. In fact, you chiropractor may recommend one of our neck pillows … or should I say “chiropractic pillows.”

Chiropractic is a Holistic Treatment

Chiropractic: A holistic type of medicine
The philosophy of chiropractic is a holistic one. It means that the treatment you receive will be 100% all natural. So often in the medical world, doctors write a prescription as the final step in treating pain. In their mind, ending the pain is the end of the problem. With chiropractors and other holistic medical professionals, the goal is not to cover up the pain, but to discover the cause of it and work with your body’s natural healing processes to heal the injury naturally.

Medications do have their place in medicine today, but many times medications that are prescribed for pain or inflammation can have bad side effects. They can cause drowsiness, effect your ability to concentrate which can affect your ability to go to work or school. The long-term effects can have an effect on body systems and organs and be even more detrimental to your health
However, holistic and natural medicine is an alternative and increasingly popular form of treatment. Chiropractors can use a number of methods for pain relief:
  • spinal manipulation
  • techniques such as traction, non surgical decompression
  • electrotherapy such as ultrasound and interferential stimulation
  • nutrition
  • cold or hot therapy
  • recommend changes to diet
  • massage and trigger point therapy
  • prescribed exercises and stretches
These natural therapies do not create side effects that many medications do. Most importantly, it works with your body’s natural healing ability to create an all natural healing process for your body.

Natural Treatment Options for Women with Osteoporosis

Studies have shown that for people affected with osteoporosis, the risk of fractures increases. In fact, for women who are over age 40, 40% will have a fracture if they have osteoporosis. The fractures often occur in the wrist, hip or the spine. These fractures can lead to a decrease quality of life because of a decrease in range of motion, decrease in mobility and chronic pain.

Researchers looking to understand the effect of osteoporosis and fractures on numerous conditions of health have discovered that women who previously sustained fractures a major decrease in health associated quality in life was alike or worse than endured by patients with diabetes, arthritis, lung disease and other types of chronic illness. This current study Global Longitudinal Study of Osteoporosis in Women (GLOW), which is located at the Center for Outcomes Research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and published online in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

An article published in May 2010, in the issue of Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (JAAOS) had stated that one in every two women in the United States will have a fracture associated to osteoporosis in their lifetime. It continues that only a couple of those women will be diagnosed and treated for osteoporosis. If osteoporosis is discovered and treated it would greatly reduce the amounts of fractures.

Current estimates show that 10 million persons in the United States have osteoporosis. Women should be educated about bone health as they get older.

What about natural treatments for osteoporosis to prevent falls and fractures?

  • Nutrition- Vitamin D, Vitamin K and Magnesium and are important. Green leafy vegetables should also be incorporated into your diet.

  • Acupuncture - Both acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be helpful in treating osteoporosis. Studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective in preventing osteoporosis in women after menapause (study reported in the Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients. Another study found that acupuncture may improve bone mass (American Journal of Chinese Medicine).

  • Chiropractic Treatment- proper alignment will help with function. Chiropractic adjustments can also ease the pain associated with osteoporosis. Your chiropractor can also recommend exercises and using a simple tens unit at home for pain relief.

  • Weight Bearing Exercise- These type of exercises are key to building muscle and bone mass. Weight bearing exercises include walking, jogging, and dancing. You can also get a great weight bearing workout at the gym by using the elliptical machine, stair stepper and weights.

  • Exercise for Balance, Posture and Functioning- Try Yoga, Qi Chong or Tai Chi for improving balance and coordination.

Back Pain When Sleeping Or After Sleep...

Sometimes when you sleep for an extended period of time in one position it can cause soreness in the back when you wake up. The same thing can happen when in one place for many hours. Here are a few things you can try to get better quality sleep and not wake up with a sore back:

  • If you have an extra comforter/sleeping bag, place that under you to change to consistency of your mattresss.Maybe it needs to softer (or straighter). Check your mattress (is there a bow or a dip in there? ). Recently I had a patient who had an issue with her bed and it caused a lot of lower back pain.

  • Use a different neck pillow- try to choose a cervical support pillow with a neck roll.

  • Use something under your knees when you sleep (this is how I sleep)- I just put a pillow under my knees if I sleep on my back and between my legs if I am on my side. You can also use positioning products such as the knee elevator (for back sleeping) or the Spinal Relief pillow (for side sleeping)

  • Do some stretches right when you get up specifically for your lower back. When you get into the hot shower- let the water hit the lower back area and bend down slowly and to the side. Don’t extend back to much as this is not good for your back.

  • You should also need to get adjusted…go see a chiropractor to get treated and see what he says. You can also get some muscle work on your back. Plus, get some biofreeze (pain relief gel) that you can massage into the lower back muscles

  • If your back pain has been going on for some time, Use a hot pack on your lower back in the evening time while watching tv (gel packs work great).

  • Finally, sleeping for an extended period of time (over 9-10 hours) - try to avoid that. It can be avoided, so just get up and move around, stretch in the a.m. You can always take naps later.

Pay attention to what you are doing during the day also – and see if that is somehow contributing to your lower back. Sounds simple, but certain activities can bring on the pain moreso. For example, wearing heals for a greater part of the day, standing for a long time, exercising without doing a stretch before or after, doing a certain exercise (for example elliptical machine/rowing machine)

CT Spine and Disc Center is located in central Connecticut- Specializing in patients who suffer from sciatica, disc degeneration, bulging disc or herniated disc in the lumbar spine. Call us at 860-633-8756 to see if you are a candidate for non surgical spinal decompression
