“Doc, Your Going To Crack Me, Are You?”

As a chiropractor for 13+ years, I am still surprised to see some people are afraid of getting treated with chiropractic because they think there is a chance of bones being broken or some other bodily harm. Or even hear how another doctor says not to get chiropractic because it’s dangerous.

Chiropractic is one of the safest treatments out there. Let’s say someone has an ache in the back. They go to the medicine cabinet and take a pill. Well that medicine doesn’t just go right to the area in pain but goes everywhere in the body. It’s like using an atomic bomb to a whole town to get rid of mice in one house.

The chiropractic adjustments we do are a safe and gentle way to stop a problem or a pain without having to drop that “atomic bomb”, and maybe cause more problems than we started with.

To learn more about our safe, gentle, chiropractic treatments, speak with one of our chiropractors at (860) 633-8756.

Being Proactive at Home Can Help Chiropractic Adjustments

Over the years I've found that adjustments make a huge difference in relieving back pain and keeping muscles loose for patients. However patients tend to get better faster if they do a few things at home too!

First of all adjustments that align the spine ans take pressure off of nerves is the #1 factor. Here's why: Muscles are controlled by nerves. If nerves are kept interference free, communication to the muscles is 100% and therefore they'll work like they should.

Second, when the spine and pelvis are in alignment muscles stay in balance. This allows for better mobility of the spine and allows inflammation to dissipate.

With lower back pain I have found that if patients can comfortably stretch their hamstrings and glut muscles it can speed the healing process. Here's why: Everything in the body works together. Hamstrings connect to the gluteus muscles, gluteus to the low back etc... Keeping the whole connection pathway to the low back loose and mobile helps us to restore motion and alignment in the back.

Work Related Low Back Pain

The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine published a study showing in cases of washers with low back pain, that they had a higher disability recurrence if they saw a physical therapist or MD versus seeing a chiropractor.
Researchers concluded that the results seem to suggest chiropractic treatment reduces disability recurrence.
Why does this happen? Chiropractic helps the body to heal; it doesn’t have nasty side effects. So a medication may work in the short term, but in the long run it is harmful for your body. Medical doctors primarily only treat with medication.

Occipital Neuralgia - Success with Chiropractic

Occipital Neuralgia can cause severe neck pain and headache-like pain. What happens is that pressure and inflammation around the back of the neck puts alot of pressure on nerves in that region; namely the occipital nerves.

Chiropractic neck adjustment helps to loosen the occipital muscles, cervical paraspinal muscles, and trapezius muscles in the back of the neck. Chiropractic treatment allows inflammation to dissipate and nerves to be free from pressure.

Your chiropractor can also help to correct postures like forward head carriage. This posture in particular contributes to pressure and tension in the back of the neck. When the head shifts forward, not only does it tension the spinal cord and nerves but it stretches the muscles in the posterior neck. Through all of the muscle fibers run nerves as well, so this adds to the nerve pressure and therefore pain.

In addition to the chiropractic adjustments the doctors also use muscle work, therapies like neck traction, and specific exercises to help spinal alignment stay corrected.

My Low Back Exercises Don’t Seem to Help my Pain …

Lower back exercises may or may not help in all cases. Most often we need a combination of things to get better. Exercises by themselves rarely do the trick.

Relieving nerve pressure is the real key. What we need to do this the quickest is chiropractic adjustments. Home therapies and medication may give us temporary relief.

The way that adjustments help the most is because they align the spine. This relieves nerve pressure and allows motion to be restored. This will then allow inflammation to dissipate.

So often I see patients who have been sent to physical therapy that get no help or sometimes get worse. You are essentially trying to exercise the problem away, which doesn’t usually work. We need to heal an area up before re-strengthening it.

This is especially true for acute patients where the injury was very recent. If your back pain is more chronic, meaning it’s been happening over a longer period of time, chances are the pain is not much from inflammation. Exercises at this stage will help. For acute pain cases you should start with therapies like electric stimulation and ice. Stretches and gentle chiropractic works well also. Exercise comes later on in care.

If you or someone you know has been suffering with back pain call our office to see if chiropractic may be the best solution for you.

My Chiropractor said “Motion is Life!”

Walking Can Help Back Pain
What this means is that our bodies and spines are made of a bunch of moving parts. When these moving parts, otherwise known as joints, shift out of place and get stuck it becomes a problem.

Our backs have 24 vertebrae and 72 joints just in the spine alone, so moving parts will get stuck or shift out of place occasionally.

When things get stuck and can’t move inflammation builds up increasing pressure on nerves; this makes pain worse. So the next time you have back pain keep moving. A lot of times the body will allow things to shift back in place. Not only that, it helps increase circulation, inflammation is able to dissipate out, nutrients and hydration are able to get back into the joints and tissues better.

This doesn’t mean ignore your pain, but try to stick with motions that feel good. Something that works really well is simple walking. Stick with flat ground and something softer (like grass vs. pavement) may feel better.

This is another reason chiropractic adjustments work extremely well. They get joints moving again; this, in turn, relieves nerve pressure and pain.

Long Time Back Pain Sufferer Speaks …

Listen to what one of our patients had to say:

After seeing his doctor and a surgeon, Pete realized he didn’t want to be cut. He knew there had to be another way to end his back pain. He had seen a chiropractor in the past which helped; but this particular doctor’s treatments were very painful to do. Luckily, Pete and his wife found our office, and he hasn’t suffered major back pain since.

Because Pete did so well, he comes in periodically for chiropractic adjustments for whichever ache or pain he presents with. Success story #37.
