"Can I Exercise My Pain Away?"

It's a nice thought, if it only worked. I love the old NIKEY slogan, "Just Do It" and there's some to be said about mind over matter. But, it usually doesn't work that well. Don't get me wrong, you can do a lot with affirmations and visualization, maybe meditations, and more. Why make things worse though. Your medical doctor's office may be associated with a physical therapy outfit, and that's why they always refer there.

In some cases certain exercises may hurt your back. Talk to your Chiropractor to find the best way to reduce your pain.

Which Neck Traction Unit is Better For Me?

If you have recently been having neck pain, numbness and tingling, or even shooting pains you may  have tried a number of treatments including chiropractic, physical therapy, massage and maybe even  home neck traction. Choosing the right home neck traction can be a daunting task. Do you get the over the door neck traction or do you opt for something where you are laying on your back? You can also get a neck stretcher that is like an inflatable neck collar (example: the trac collar). Lots of choices.

Here is an arc4life article that helps you choose the type of traction unit: over the door, supine or pneumatic types.

Treatments that Compliment Chiropractic

So many treatments go hand-in-hand with chiropractic therapy. Below I have listed a few that may help you get rid of your pain even faster than with just chiropractic alone.

1. Muscle Massage- All of the bones in the body are connected by a network of tendons, ligaments, and muscles. For the purpose of this report, when we say “muscle” we will be referring to muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Relaxing the muscles helps keep the body balanced and motion of the spine fluid.

2. Acupressure- In some ways it is similar to muscle massage because it helps break up trigger points allowing muscles to work normally. It really works like acupuncture, which is a great compliment to chiropractic treatment also. Acupuncture is used to balance the body meridians. Restoring the various systems of the body allows things to function at their best. Acupressure is applying pressure to those meridian points you would put the needle in for acupuncture.

3. Physical Therapy- Rehabilitative exercises or strengthening exercises help us build back strength to weaker areas of the body. This will also help to even out or balance out the body. Your physical therapist may be able to actually work directly with you to perform specific exercises and stretches to the areas most affected in your particular case.

At CT Spine & Disc Center we utilize various other treatments such as trigger point massage, back exercises, back stretches, decompression therapy, and traction in addition to various chiropractic techniques to help our patients receive fast and comfortable pain relief.

My Low Back Exercises Don’t Seem to Help my Pain …

Lower back exercises may or may not help in all cases. Most often we need a combination of things to get better. Exercises by themselves rarely do the trick.

Relieving nerve pressure is the real key. What we need to do this the quickest is chiropractic adjustments. Home therapies and medication may give us temporary relief.

The way that adjustments help the most is because they align the spine. This relieves nerve pressure and allows motion to be restored. This will then allow inflammation to dissipate.

So often I see patients who have been sent to physical therapy that get no help or sometimes get worse. You are essentially trying to exercise the problem away, which doesn’t usually work. We need to heal an area up before re-strengthening it.

This is especially true for acute patients where the injury was very recent. If your back pain is more chronic, meaning it’s been happening over a longer period of time, chances are the pain is not much from inflammation. Exercises at this stage will help. For acute pain cases you should start with therapies like electric stimulation and ice. Stretches and gentle chiropractic works well also. Exercise comes later on in care.

If you or someone you know has been suffering with back pain call our office to see if chiropractic may be the best solution for you.

Back Surgery Costs Us 16 Billion A Year And A lot Of The Time Doesn’t Even Work!

Back Surgery Costs Billions A Year And Most Of The Time Should Not Even Be Done!
Back Surgery Costs Us 16 Billion A Year And A lot Of The Time Doesn’t Even Work!

Today I was reading an article in a well known magazine about the exorbitant cost of our health care system. I was shocked to hear a big chunk of it – billions of dollars, in fact, a year goes toward unnecessary surgeries.

One of the major unnecessary surgery’s was back fusion surgery. The reason it’s often unnnescessary is there is actually no evidence back surgery is any more successful conventional treatments like physical therapy, chiropractic, medication and others.

Being a chiropractor and seeing patients for over 5 years I already know that back surgery is very unsuccessful and that the results of other back treatment and therapies were much cheaper to do, easier to do, and even worked better. I was glad to hear someone spoke up and wrote about this in a major magazine.

Not only is back surgery very unsuccessful its very risky. People often forget that people get infections in the hospital, people have to take all sorts of medications and even knocked out with anesthesia, and mistakes happen. And lastly, even if everything goes well – the pain often returns a few years later. Not to mention a lot of the time you are still left with some pain or restrictions in certain activiesl you can and cannot do.

In some cases surgery is required and necessary, but most times it can be avoided. I urge every person that asks me about it to try every kind of non surgical treatment first before electing for surgery.

At Ct Spine and Disc Center we now have new treatment with over 80% success rate for eliminating back pain and sciatica. To learn more, visit www.CTBackDr.com.
