Can The Chiropractic Adjustment Help My Headaches?

First let me say that about 90% of headaches come from the neck. A simple X-ray or plain film radiograph can show us the exact misalignments.

Keep in mind your Chiropractor with their trained hands can feel a lot. I even know of a case where someone that had bad headaches for years, after one adjustment felt much better.

I was also told that this individual was prescribed medications he knew had dangerous side effect, and since they find the seem to help anyway, he stopped taking them!

The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

The "Tennis Ball" Trick

Using a tennis ball is a great way to massage out trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points are when the muscle binds up and creates a knot. This often causes pain because it restricts motion and puts pressure on nerves. Watch this short video where a chiropractor shows how to use the tennis ball. The Glastonbury Chiropractor is located in central Connecticut- CT Spine and Disc Center specializes in patients who suffer from sciatica, disc degeneration, bulging disc or herniated disc in the lumbar spine. For low back pain, neck pain, midback pain, headaches, fibromyalgia and more, chiropractic can help you. Call our Glastonbury office at 860-633-8756 to schedule an appointment and to see if you are a candidate for non surgical spinal decompression.

As We Get Older We Don't Heal As Quick...

When we were younger, we start out as a toddler learning to walk, and we crash here and slam down there. And we just pop right up like nothing happened. Then we get a little older, and we tumble over here, jump from there....often with a crash, bang, boom. Then we get a bit older and start plying organized sports - more crashing, usually harder, because it's someone else contributing to the spill...

As you may assume, some of those bumps and bruises carry over to us later in life; not to mention, when we take a fall now in our 60's, we don't recuperate so quick.

So it's okay to go a little slower, be a bit more cautious, stop performing certain activities... It might be hard to hang up the rugby kleats, but is it worth it to take care of a back injury.

If this does happen however, we are here at CT Spine for YOU. Or maybe, you simply strain something in the back getting up from the chair (most often it happens unexpectedly, and from something we don't expect). Either way, don't hesitate to contact the office if something hurts.

When Is The Last Time You Saw Your Chiropractor?

a simple solution to help back and neck pain: seeing the chiropractor
A simple solution to neck and back pain
The last time you saw your chiropractor was most likely when you had pain in your neck or back that wouldn't go away. You knew you messed your neck up one day at work and tried to tough it out for 3 days and hope the pain would go away on its own.

The question is; why torture yourself? Just get in to see the chiropractor!

You see, the quicker you get in usually means the faster we can fix an issue. Now that you have waited three days it may take three days to fully get rid of. Maybe not, but why take a chance. Plus, who wants to be in severe pain for 3 days.

Also, if you've been doing good, but it's been a long time since you've had chiropractic, it's a good idea to go. It's a great preventative measure for your health and to limit pain.

The Glastonbury Chiropractor is located in central Connecticut- CT Spine and Disc Center specializes in patients who suffer from sciatica, disc degeneration, bulging disc or herniated disc in the lumbar spine. "Am I Causing My Pain?"

I can't tell you how many times I've played process of elimination to get rid of someone's pain... I ask myself a few questions. Could you possibly be doing something that is causing or worsening your pain? Is it something at work, or something you are doing around the house?... What if you are constantly tilting your head to the left? Well, with no trauma this may still be starting to cause pain. You see if you do one particular posture over and over again, you body starts to take that posture or alignment permanently!

Or let's say you keep injuring your shoulder at the gym. You may be doing repetitive damage to a particular joint or muscle. What if you stop doing the possible exercise or exercises that appear to be causing a problem? This is a good ideal to try this. ... That whole process of elimination.

Every year myself or another Chiropractor will see numerous back pain sufferers. We can put the spine in alignment, take pressure of nerves, and reduce pain but what if you are constantly doing something that makes the pain return. Now I'm not talking about playing a professional sport, those guys may make a substantial living out of it and know they have to see the Chiropractor on a weekly basis, but do you? Maybe this helps but can you be avoiding something that's triggering the pain.

Don't get me wrong, you may have had a past injury, where you need regular chiropractic adjustments. But that's not my point; my point is simply that there may be things you are doing everyday that are nor helping your back or neck. Try to think of these things, and play that "process of elimination" game.

The Glastonbury Chiropractor is located in central Connecticut- CT Spine and Disc Center specializes in patients who suffer from sciatica, disc degeneration, bulging disc or herniated disc in the lumbar spine. Some tests your Chiropractor may do to detect a Disc Problem!

On top of a consult (asking a patient question like: "when did it start?", "what were you doing?"...we want to look at a few things. Things like ranges of motion, antalgia (is the person slumped to the left or right because of pain?), maybe a neurological evaluation... And orthopedic tests. Tests like SLR, and Becterew's. What are these - SLR or Straight Leg Raise is where the patient lies on his or her back and the doctor lifts the leg straight up. Becterew's is done seated. The patient raises each leg up as well as both at the same time to reveal back pain.
Here is the SLR Test to help determine the Cause of Lower Back Pain

Each of these tests along with the other things mentioned will help us to determine if a disc injury is present. Of course imagery like an MRI and a detailed patient history can be the most history during our consultation may be the most telling.

It's So Sad...

Chiropractic For Animals Can be Very Helpful
It's always about the money. I was recently reading how animal chiropractic is been very popular because of the success with it. Animal Chiropractor Daniel Kamen stated "Why spend $5000 on hip dysphasia surgery, when a simple, almost free, chiropractic technique can prevent it's onset".

Because it's all about money, some states are banning Chiropractic on animals. Thank goodness we can adjust people... But we still are pretty well cemented into the drugs and surgery model. If we do this then that's less surgery candidates, if we do that patient don't need this medication for the rest of their lives...

To close, I just want to say that you really need to take care of yourself and do the research before undergoing any treatment.

Kinesio Taping- I See It Everywhere Now

Increase Blood Flow, Enhance Movement and
Pain Relief with Kinesio Tape
First of all what is it?  Kinesio tape or Therapeutic tape or flexible tape is used to increase blood flow, enhance movement, provide pain relief as well as support weak joints or muscles. You probably saw it first when you watched beach volleyball in the Beijing Olympics four years ago. After watching this year’s London Olympics not only did I see it on the beach volleyballers, I saw it on track athletes and even swimmers. It has definitely proven to become a big help for athletes but even if you’re not completing in the Olympic Games it can be a big help.

Occipital Neuralgia - Success with Chiropractic

Occipital Neuralgia can cause severe neck pain and headache-like pain. What happens is that pressure and inflammation around the back of the neck puts alot of pressure on nerves in that region; namely the occipital nerves.

Chiropractic neck adjustment helps to loosen the occipital muscles, cervical paraspinal muscles, and trapezius muscles in the back of the neck. Chiropractic treatment allows inflammation to dissipate and nerves to be free from pressure.

Your chiropractor can also help to correct postures like forward head carriage. This posture in particular contributes to pressure and tension in the back of the neck. When the head shifts forward, not only does it tension the spinal cord and nerves but it stretches the muscles in the posterior neck. Through all of the muscle fibers run nerves as well, so this adds to the nerve pressure and therefore pain.

In addition to the chiropractic adjustments the doctors also use muscle work, therapies like neck traction, and specific exercises to help spinal alignment stay corrected.

Chiropractic is a Holistic Treatment

Chiropractic: A holistic type of medicine
The philosophy of chiropractic is a holistic one. It means that the treatment you receive will be 100% all natural. So often in the medical world, doctors write a prescription as the final step in treating pain. In their mind, ending the pain is the end of the problem. With chiropractors and other holistic medical professionals, the goal is not to cover up the pain, but to discover the cause of it and work with your body’s natural healing processes to heal the injury naturally.

Medications do have their place in medicine today, but many times medications that are prescribed for pain or inflammation can have bad side effects. They can cause drowsiness, effect your ability to concentrate which can affect your ability to go to work or school. The long-term effects can have an effect on body systems and organs and be even more detrimental to your health
However, holistic and natural medicine is an alternative and increasingly popular form of treatment. Chiropractors can use a number of methods for pain relief:
  • spinal manipulation
  • techniques such as traction, non surgical decompression
  • electrotherapy such as ultrasound and interferential stimulation
  • nutrition
  • cold or hot therapy
  • recommend changes to diet
  • massage and trigger point therapy
  • prescribed exercises and stretches
These natural therapies do not create side effects that many medications do. Most importantly, it works with your body’s natural healing ability to create an all natural healing process for your body.

The Scary Truth about Low Back Surgery

Any good doctor, whether it’s your chiropractor, orthopedic surgeon, primary care, or someone else, will tell you only to do surgery as a last option. The reason is because there’s no guarantee, there’s lots of risk, and even if it does work wonders it most often relapses and the back pain or sciatica is back. Then, you go through the same risks all over again with less chance of success.

Here’s a link to a (Good Housekeeping) special report one of our patients brought into us that was very interesting: Good Housekeeping Special Report - Click Here!

Jerry Rice: Spokesperson for the Foundation of Chiropractic Progress

I was lucky that my father took me to his chiropractor when I was just a kid in high school. I had a sports injury and his chiropractor, my chiropractor, helped me get back out on the field. It was around this time, when I saw all the people he helped, that I knew it’s what I wanted to do…

I remember the super star 49ers team with Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, etc … and how chiropractic treatment was part of their regimen and how it was an integral part in keeping them healthy and at the tops of their game when they were winning games and even back-to-back Super Bowls.

Jerry Rice sees a Chiropractor to stay healthy

Here’s what Rice had to say when joining the foundation: “Chiropractic care has been instrumental in my life both on and off the field, and I’m excited to share this with the American public. I have been blessed with a long and healthy career as a professional athlete, and as I move forward into the next stage of my life, chiropractic care will continue to be an important part of my game plan.”

That’s the great thing about chiropractic care is it can help so many people, from athletes at any level, to people suffering from back pain after a work injury, to people who want to maintain their health or mobility.

Listen to Jerry and make sure to visit our office if you’re suffering with back or neck pain, and if it’s been awhile, come in to see one of the Chiropractors and get your spine checked.

Consumer Reports says: "Chiropractor Best Choice For Back Pain Relief!"

Chiropractic in Connecticut
Consumer Reports lists chiropractors as your best choice for back pain relief.
When compared to seeing your medical doctor (treatment with medication), survey respondents said they were more likely to be “highly satisfied” with their chiropractic doctor.

Here are some of the great things about seeing your chiropractor:

1)Chiropractic care is safe and drug free- the chiropractic adjustments allow the body to function like it should by freeing up nerves from pressure. This allows the body to heal itself. Basically it is the body healing from the inside-out, not outside-in like with medications. Which, by the way, have harmful side effects too. Not to mention, for severe back pain sufferers, some are given very strong, even addictive medications.
2)The chiropractors at CT Spine incorporate therapies (stim, ice, muscle massage) and stretches, or exercises, to help with your condition or back pain. Often times without removing nerve pressure (the chiropractic adjustments do this) the body does not heal. So you can have physical therapy and get instructions for home exercises, but they may do more harm than help.
3)Because chiropractors use natural methods of treatment (adjustments, natural therapies, nutrition, muscle work) they take the time to listen, and are often open to newer, non-traditional treatments to help with your pain. One example of this is using the DRX 9000. For more information on CT DRX 9000 or CT Spinal Decompression visit CTSPINEDR.COM.

Low Back And Leg Pain Relief...
Treatments Available For Your Sciatica!

NON SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION - TREATMENT METHOD OF CHOICE FOR SCIATICA OR LUMBAR RADICULOPATHY SUFFERERS

The 1st line of defense is usually conservative treatment by your doctor, chiropractor, or therapist.

Your doctor may use some anti-inflammatory or pain relief meds or over the counter medication. He may also give you some home exercises or stretches to perform that help the muscles.

Your chiropractor will use gentle spinal manipulations to align the spine as well as muscular therapies like electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, ice, or heat, trigger point work to name a handful.

Your medical doctor or your chiropractor will also use specific test in the office to best determine the cause of your symptoms; they may also send you for specific images such as an MRI, or CT scan of your spine and discs.

Your physical therapist may work with on stretching, strengthening muscles, as well as postural exercises and other therapies.

Your massage therapist will use various muscle techniques to relief muscle tension, spasm, and trigger points.

If this does not work the new treatment method of choice is non-surgical spinal decompression with the drx9000.

Pain relief shots are another treatment option. This is typically in the form of a steroid injection or an epidural.

If all of these options fail the next alternative is surgery. There are many types of back surgery. Keep in mind no matter how non-invasive you think this or that surgery may be, it’s still surgery. Any good doctor or surgeon will only recommend this if the individual has exhausted all other options and/or have such severe symptoms it warrants immediate action.

Back Surgery Costs Us 16 Billion A Year And A lot Of The Time Doesn’t Even Work!

Back Surgery Costs Billions A Year And Most Of The Time Should Not Even Be Done!
Back Surgery Costs Us 16 Billion A Year And A lot Of The Time Doesn’t Even Work!

Today I was reading an article in a well known magazine about the exorbitant cost of our health care system. I was shocked to hear a big chunk of it – billions of dollars, in fact, a year goes toward unnecessary surgeries.

One of the major unnecessary surgery’s was back fusion surgery. The reason it’s often unnnescessary is there is actually no evidence back surgery is any more successful conventional treatments like physical therapy, chiropractic, medication and others.

Being a chiropractor and seeing patients for over 5 years I already know that back surgery is very unsuccessful and that the results of other back treatment and therapies were much cheaper to do, easier to do, and even worked better. I was glad to hear someone spoke up and wrote about this in a major magazine.

Not only is back surgery very unsuccessful its very risky. People often forget that people get infections in the hospital, people have to take all sorts of medications and even knocked out with anesthesia, and mistakes happen. And lastly, even if everything goes well – the pain often returns a few years later. Not to mention a lot of the time you are still left with some pain or restrictions in certain activiesl you can and cannot do.

In some cases surgery is required and necessary, but most times it can be avoided. I urge every person that asks me about it to try every kind of non surgical treatment first before electing for surgery.

At Ct Spine and Disc Center we now have new treatment with over 80% success rate for eliminating back pain and sciatica. To learn more, visit www.CTBackDr.com.
