Can My Back Pain Be Coming From My Stomach

Yes, your back pain can be coming from your stomach. If anything in that core region is disrupted you may have lower back pain. Think of the core as the middle of the body; sort of like if you had a hula hoop around the waist - that's your core!

Everything works together, so if your stomach is really weak then your back may be picking up the slack. Or let's say one side oblique muscles are constantly short and taut...the opposite side may be constantly stretched. This can cause an imbalance and therefore pain! Posture plays a very important role in overall health.

The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Why Torture Yourself...

Here's the scenario; you wrench your back moving somefurniture.  Use that heat pack and/or Biofreeze you have.  Why Torture Yourself just trying to keep going or toughing it out for days.

"I'm just too busy to stop and sit with the heat or put gel on my back, besides I can't reach anyway."

C'mon now, let's not make excuses.  Let the hot shower soak on the back, have someone apply it for you, etc... And take a break, heal your wounds.  If not, you may be worthless for days?

So next time this sort of thing happens, do the right thing and tend to your body.  If you give you back love, it will love you back.

My Back Hurts So I Sleep On The Couch

Sleeping on the couch once in awhile is okay but it's not something to make a habit of. It's one thing if you were evicted and your staying at your friends place but quite another if you have a cozy bed waiting for you. Plus, if you are sleeping on your friends couch because you were evicted you probably have bigger problems than low back pain.

Here's the thing, the couch really isn't made for sleeping all night, every night. The support just isn't there for the spine. Not to mention, you may not use your regular pillow. Your usual neck pillow doesn't fit on the couch or you are in such an awkward position your head doesn't rest properly on that pillow.

So not only are the back and neck often crooked on the couch, the living room is also not always conducive to sleep. There's light shining from the kitchen, glowing from the tv, the dog is all over you, etc, etc...

What happened to my Back?

Often we may be fine and then all of a sudden - wham!!! Back Pain.
What happened? Here's the thing - you may think you've been fine but the back may have been misaligned for some time.

Back Pain Can Strike at the Worst Times...
Not all the nerves detect pain, in fact, most don't. This means you can have pressure on a nerve or nerves and not necessarily know it's there. Then, eventually as that pressure increases or more nerves are affected, you get pain.

So here you are: "I've been fine, healthy" "now I have pain". When in fact you haven't been; you've been out of alignment for some time...

A big help is to see you Chiropractor periodically, pain or no pain. Have your alignment checked on a more regular basis.

"Am I Causing My Pain?"

I can't tell you how many times I've played process of elimination to get rid of someone's pain... I ask myself a few questions. Could you possibly be doing something that is causing or worsening your pain? Is it something at work, or something you are doing around the house?... What if you are constantly tilting your head to the left? Well, with no trauma this may still be starting to cause pain. You see if you do one particular posture over and over again, you body starts to take that posture or alignment permanently!

Or let's say you keep injuring your shoulder at the gym. You may be doing repetitive damage to a particular joint or muscle. What if you stop doing the possible exercise or exercises that appear to be causing a problem? This is a good ideal to try this. ... That whole process of elimination.

Every year myself or another Chiropractor will see numerous back pain sufferers. We can put the spine in alignment, take pressure of nerves, and reduce pain but what if you are constantly doing something that makes the pain return. Now I'm not talking about playing a professional sport, those guys may make a substantial living out of it and know they have to see the Chiropractor on a weekly basis, but do you? Maybe this helps but can you be avoiding something that's triggering the pain.

Don't get me wrong, you may have had a past injury, where you need regular chiropractic adjustments. But that's not my point; my point is simply that there may be things you are doing everyday that are nor helping your back or neck. Try to think of these things, and play that "process of elimination" game.

Is My Pain in the Back or SI Joints?

What are the SI joints and what are they? The S and the I stand for Sacro-Iliac joints; where the pelvis meets the sacrum (or as many refer to it as the tailbone).

Most of us consider this the back as well. If you reach back with your hands above each butt cheek and feel a bony prominence or hard spot that is probably the SI joint. There is often a muscle trigger point around this area also. Usually just above, and you will notice the consistency is different plus it moves around.

I read something once on how your back doctor may check your spine but not the SI's, and something can go unnoticed? I suppose you can have a spot shot done with X-ray and not visualize the SI's.

At CT Spine we always check the SI joints as well. With any tests like an X-Ray, one must correlate with a physical examination!

I Have Arthritis In My Back...

He said there was nothing I could do for my arthritis. My doctor told me to avoid things that bother my back, but that's difficult seeing as sometimes this can be just about anything.

I'm the other hand, I've been seeing the chiropractor and my pain in my back has been better. He says that there may not be a lot I can do for my condition but temporarily making my back feel better and slowing the arthritic process down is good enough for me!

Study Shows Improvement in Acute Low back pain in Military Patients

Study Shows that Chiropractic Therapy
Helps Military Personel ages 18-35 with actue
low back pain
In the April 2013 issue of Spine, a new study showed that a decrease in acute lower back pain in military patients when they received a combination of chiropractic and medical treatment, as opposed to just received medical attention. The study showed a significant decrease in their back pain as well as physical functioning.

The study involved 91 active duty military personnel ages 18-35. 73% of participants in the medical care plus chiropractic treatment group rated their global improvement as pain completely gone, much better or moderately better. Only 17% in the standard medical care group said their pain was completely gone.

"It is critical that we explore drug-less approaches to reduce pain," said Wayne B. Jonas, MD, president and CEO of Samueli Institute. “Chiropractic manipulation is an important option to consider for musculoskeletal disorders, which is the most prevalent pain complaint in the military.

Can Whiplash affect my Lower Back?

The Spine is Like a Kinetic Chain
Whiplash typically refers to the neck but it can affect the back. Let's just say you were hit from behind while in the car or maybe fell on your back. My first point is that your whole spine is connected. So if you did take the brunt of the whiplash to the neck you can guess it will work its way to the thoracic (mid back) spine or to the lumbar (low back). Second when you get hit from behind or "fall" on your back you can get direct trauma to that area as well.

My Knee is killing Me... Could it be coming from my back

My Knee Pain is killing me could this be coming from my back
Knee Pain Got You Down? Where is it coming From?
I recently spoke with someone who was having knee pain, but did not remember doing anything that could have irritated her knee. She did remember that she had strained her lower back recently.

A lot of the time pain in the lower extremity can be coming from the back.

Nerves in the lower back communicate to your legs. In fact, some chiropractors I know only adjust the spine for this reason.

In truth, the pain may get better quicker, if the extremities are treated as well. The Glastonbury Doctors at CT Spine and Disc have training in extremity treatments in addition to the spine. The bottom line is that adjusting or treating both areas will get things better quicker. A quick way to find out if the back is the culprit is to analyze the possible cause of the pain. Did you do something to your back? If so, it was probably the back. If not, the knee may be the source of the pain.

Spine anatomy 101: The Disc

The Disc is a very important part of our spinal anatomy.
In between each bone of the spine we have a disc. This disc gives us cushioning so we can bend, twist, run, jump, etc. The inside of the disc is called the nucleus, the outer disc is called the annulus.

We can get bad back pain if we have an injury involving either part...

Steroid Injections Offer Short Term Relief, study shows

The pain associated with sciatica can be intense, often shooting pains down one leg due to pressure being put on the sciatic nerve. It can also involve numbness, tingling and weakness.

Study Shows that Steroid Injections
Offer Only Short Term Relief
One of the treatments that an Orthopedic Doctor may recommend for sciatica is an epidural. This involves the injection of a steroid into the joint spaces of the spine.

A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Nov 13, showed that these steroid injections often only provide short term pain relief. This study involved 3100 patients who were followed for over a year. 23 Clinical trials were measured.

"The review showed that [epidural injections] offered only small, short-term improvement in pain and disability for people with sciatica and had no long-term effect," said Dr. Chris Maher, a professor of physiotherapy at the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney in Australia (co author).

The results showed that at 2 weeks and 3 months after treatment, 10 trials showed leg-pain relief and 14 reported improvements in disability. But after a year or more, no differences were found in leg pain, back pain or disability for those given injections compared to those given a placebo.

"Given that the treatment effect is likely to be small and short term, patients with sciatica should discuss the potential risks involved in [steroid injections] with their doctor before agreeing to the procedure" said Maher, who also is director of the George Institute for Global Health, in Sydney.

These findings are very similar to an earlier study that showed that the steroid injections are no better than anti inflammatory medications.

At our Glastonbury chiropractic Office we offer non surgical spinal decompression treatments for patients with sciatica and leg pain. Call our office to see if you are candidate for this treatment.

Can a Lumbar Disc Injury Cause Back Spasms?

drx9000 Glastonbury CTAbsolutely. The discs in the lumbar spine act as a cushion, allowing us to move, walk, run, jump, etc … Let’s take a disc injury like a bulging disc as an example. In this case the disc bulges outward, which literally puts pressure on nerves or a nerve root. When this happens, that disc space between vertebrae will flatten. Much like a flat tire, it will flatten and bulge.

Remember, nerves control the muscles, so if we have pressure on the nerves it will create problems with the muscles those nerves go to.

So, if you put pressure on a nerve or nerve root, you may get back pain or sciatica, but you can also get back spasms, leg numbness, or something similar. Depending which disc level or levels get injured can tell us what symptoms may occur and where.

In the past, a disc injury could be a major spoiler, now with DRX9000 Spinal Decompression we can help. Call our office if you are experiencing disc pain or low back spasms.

I can beat my pain !

Whatever you suffer, whether its neck pain, back pain, headaches, or something similar, you can get relief. I’ve seen a number of people who literally get worn out by their pain, sometimes giving up and accepting a life of mind-numbing medication and/or a sedentary life giving up certain activities. Anthony Robles winning the national wrestling title

The story of wrestler Anthony Robles reminded me that we really can achieve whatever we set our mind to. Anthony was born without his right leg. Did that stop him from going to Arizona State University and winning a national title in wrestling? -Nope!

His story reminded me that we can achieve our goal of getting healthy or getting rid of our headaches etc… You may even being saying to yourself right now: “My neck pain is nothing compared to being born without a leg.” So, when you’re discouraged about your neck or back pain, remember Anthony’s story, or something similar, and remember you can be pain free!

It’s easy to feel discouraged when you’re dealing with constant pain. But there are so many others in the world from whom we can draw inspiration when we too are in pain.
