How Can I Easily Combat My Back Pain?

There's a few simple things one can do at home.

The first one is diet - avoiding highly inflammatory foods is important but drinking a good amount liquid like water is also high on the list. Those discs in between each spinal bone have and need a large water content.

Next, is keeping the spine in alignment. A great way to do that is when you sit. Simply use a lower back posture cushion to keep that spine where it belongs. Seeing your Chiropractor can also make a big difference.

Lastly, stretch the muscles and keep Them loose. Remember all those muscles attach to bones and when things are really tight they will pull thing out of alignment this means no pressure this means no pressure and no pain.

Can My Back Pain Be Coming From My Stomach

Yes, your back pain can be coming from your stomach. If anything in that core region is disrupted you may have lower back pain. Think of the core as the middle of the body; sort of like if you had a hula hoop around the waist - that's your core!

Everything works together, so if your stomach is really weak then your back may be picking up the slack. Or let's say one side oblique muscles are constantly short and taut...the opposite side may be constantly stretched. This can cause an imbalance and therefore pain! Posture plays a very important role in overall health.

My Back Hurts So I Sleep On The Couch

Sleeping on the couch once in awhile is okay but it's not something to make a habit of. It's one thing if you were evicted and your staying at your friends place but quite another if you have a cozy bed waiting for you. Plus, if you are sleeping on your friends couch because you were evicted you probably have bigger problems than low back pain.

Here's the thing, the couch really isn't made for sleeping all night, every night. The support just isn't there for the spine. Not to mention, you may not use your regular pillow. Your usual neck pillow doesn't fit on the couch or you are in such an awkward position your head doesn't rest properly on that pillow.

So not only are the back and neck often crooked on the couch, the living room is also not always conducive to sleep. There's light shining from the kitchen, glowing from the tv, the dog is all over you, etc, etc...

The Busy Active Lives of Teenagers....

Chiropractic for teens is important
especially ones involved in sports such
cheer leading, soccer, gymastics etc.
On a recent episode of Keeping up the Kardashians, young Kylie Jenner makes a trip to her chiropractors office to have her neck adjusted, all in the midst of the Kim K Drama!!

Getting adjusted is important as a young person is important.
In many cases we see patients this age because they are very active with studying, gymnastics, volley ball, cheer leading and other activities such as texting on their phones.

Misalignments in the spine can arise causing poor posture, neck pain, mid back pain, headaches and lower back pain. If corrected when younger, it's much quicker and easier to fix.

Can My Weight be Contributing to my Lower Back Pain?

extra weight contributes to bad posture
Quick answer: Yes! The bottom line is that a few extra pounds shouldn’t make a big difference, however, most people gain a significant amount of weight over time. I’ve seen patients who’ve injured themselves to the point where they weren’t exercising like normal and they started to gradually gain weight. I’ve seen people who experienced some kind of trauma and found themselves eating to cope. Also, as we get older, we often become less active.

Try strapping a 20 lb back pack to your back and wearing it all day; see if you can do it. Actually, better you don’t! I don’t want you to hurt your back. Not only will your back be sore, but you’ll be exhausted. These are symptoms you feel right away.

Over time, the increased pressure of the weight will literally start contributing to disc degeneration and joint breakdown.

Also, I’ve seen patients’ posture change because of the weight they’re carrying. I may see someone for a few visits for back pain. Then they leave the office feeling 100% only to come back one year later 25 lbs heavier and significant lumbar extension. This can especially happen when the majority of that weight is in the gut region. Some people tend to lean back or extend the lumbar spine to counter balance the weight. So, if that’s what your posture looks like you can now imagine even more stress and strain on the joints and the lumbar discs. Not only do you only have the increased weight of gravity on your back, but your spine is weaker because it’s out of position.

If your posture and spinal alignment has shifted and stayed that way for a period of time, loosing the weight may help, but may not be enough to restore it to normal. Consult with your local chiropractor to see how he or she may be able to help.

Chronic Low Back Pain Is On The Rise…What Are Your Treatment Options?

Chronic Lower Back Pain Is on the RiseA new research study by Dr.Timothy Carey, a Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina reveals that chronic lower back pain may be increasing. This statistic was found in North Carolina and is being extrapolated for the entire USA.

Dr. Carey’s team discovered that the cost of treating chronic low back pain has not only increased, but that patients are simply seeking more services and treatment. Also they found that the number of people who suffer from long term lower back pain is increasing.

According to the study, 3.9 percent of North Carolina residents surveyed in 1992 said that they had debilitating, chronic back pain. That number rose to 10.2 percent by 2006, the researchers said.

Among people reporting ongoing, serious low back pain in 1992, about 73 percent said they had seen a physician, physical therapist or chiropractor at least once during the past year. In 2006, 84 percent said they had done so. However, the average number of health care visits remained the same, at just 19 a year.

The fraction of people with back pain who had ever had back surgery increased only slightly, from 22.3 percent in 1992 to 24.8 percent in 2006. Although the study’s aim was not to determine the cause of lower back pain, they ascertained that obesity and depression do play a role as well.

They point out that the cost of chronic lower back pain is a loss in productivity among workers, to the tune of $100 billion dollars a year. Dr. Carey states that “In one sense, we're all paying for back pain. It ends up being reflected in our health insurance premiums and our Social Security disability costs”

Also, lower back pain causes impairment. The National Health Interview Survey showed that neck and lower back pain increased from 3.2% in 1997 to 8.8% in 2006.

The findings also raise questions as to the effectiveness of current back pain treatments, Carey said. For example, another recent study he participated in showed that exercise remains underutilized as a means of treating chronic back and neck pain, though numerous studies show it can be effective.

A University of Washington health services researcher, Brook Martin, who specializes in studying spinal services, agrees that a doubling of chronic back pain over 14 years raises serious issues about current treatment approaches. "It makes us have to think about how to approach back pain," Martin said. "Chronic care models and clinical protocols and guidelines are not really the standard in treating back pain. This kind of highlights that this might be a real need."

In the February 2009 Issue of Connecticut Magazine, Margaret Farley Steele discusses the latest treatments for chronic lower back pain.

According the National Institutes of Health, lower back pain is the #1 reason why Americans seek medical attention, followed by headaches as the #2 reason.

In her article Steele talks with many medical professionals about the different treatments available for chronic lower back pain, including:

  • Having a neurostimulator implanted in the abdomen that provides a low wattage electrical stimulation through leads to the lower back area (lumbar spine). Dr.Loyd Saberski, of the Pain Treatment Centers of New Haven explains that the “burden is on the patient” when it comes to finding relief. Dr.Saberski also notes that anemia and depression also need to be treated. He also treats with physical therapy, and nutrition among more common treatments such as pain injections.
  • At the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicene Center in Trumbull CT, Dr. Gerald Girasole offers Physical Therapy and non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. He states that if patients don’t find relief, they are referred out for a lumbar MRI and surgery is considered
  • Dr. Edward Hargus, a pain management specialist in Norwich states that most patients that experience Low Back Pain will get better in 6-8 weeks. He states that “ I see bigger and bigger back operations and poorer results all the time” He further states that stress can aggravate a chronic pain problem.
  • Dr. Matthew Bellinger, a chiropractor in Glastonbury uses non surgical spinal decompression at the CT Spine and Disc Center. These treatments take 4-6 weeks and help to rehydrate the discs in the lumbar spine.

The Chronic Pain Cycle Involves Bouts of Anxiety and DepressionSteele goes on to reveal that with all these different treatment approaches the state of Connecticut received a “B” grade in regards to pain policies set by the University of Wisconsin’s Pain and Policy Studies Group. “The researchers examined how well a state restricted unlawful use of medications while making them available for patients needing them, and they looked for pain-management training guidelines.

With the advent of technology new treatments for lower back pain are coming out everyday. Yes, chronic lower back pain is a real problem, one that we must continue to research everyday.

Heat vs Ice for Lower Back Pain Relief?

Hello everyone, Happy New Year 2009; Wishing everyone a wonderful healthy new year ahead !

Today I want to discuss one techinque for lower back pain relief that I often get asked about. Heat or ice for Lower Back Pain?

The good news is that they both can be good and they are all natural. So no side effects like medication.

To get the best results use ice when there is inflammation. This is often hot, red and feels tender. Areas are usually inflammed when they are initially injured or re-aggravated.

Heat works very well to loosen an area. So, couple of days after the initial injury when inflammation has disippated from using ice, use heat. For the ara to heal completely it may take weeks. With the use of heat to now keep the muscles loose and increase blood flow you can often get better much sooner.

Ice is often used after a football injuryHere's an example: If you watch football, you'll notice before the game most players are wearing extra clothing like sweats or sports pants and jackets. This keeps their backs, legs, and arms heated and warm. After the game often they're sore especially if they injured an area they'll have ice packs on thier back or knee, etc..This is because the area is often strained and inflammed.

The same holds true for someone with a back injury. Use ice to decrease the inflammation and back pain. If you continue to work or do physical activity you can heat your back to loosen the muscles before you begin your activity. The ice and hot packs we recommend patients are often shaped specially for certain parts of the back.

Here is a Hot and Cold Pack for the Lower Back- 10
For example, if you are icing or heating your lower back, use a larger ice pack that is 10"x13", square in shape. For your neck area, use a 6" x 20" ice pack that is shaped with a special pouch area to cover your neck area. There is also a special ice pack for your neck and upper back, with dimensions of 9" x 16" trisectional ice/heat pack- it had two side flaps for your shoulders to better coverage. Just keep in mind tha this ice pack will be a little heavier than the cervical or lumbar ice pack.

To get rid of your low back pain once and for all look into this advanced new technology we use at our office called Spinal Decompression.

For ten years I have suffered chronic Lower back pain....

At CT Spine and Disc Center , we help patients everyday who are suffering from chronic low back pain due to sciatica, disc bulges or disc hernations in the low back. Often times these patients have tried Pain medications, physical therapy, chiropractic, cortisone injections, epidural injections as well as pain management to name a few. Below is a patient testimonial we recently received from a patient who had been suffering from lower back pain for 10years:

"For ten years I had suffered chronic lower back pain due to disc compression. I had received conventional chiropractic treatment for years and got limited relief. So I had begun to accept the frustrations of my condition which included limited motion, discomfort when sitting for long periods, or the occasional incident of ‘throwing out my lower back’ which landed me in the bed for several days. I heard about the DRX 9000 decompression treatment, was skeptical but decided to seek treatment when I had a particularly painful episode. I found Dr. Bellinger after much searching online and discovered that he is only one of four chiropractors in CT offering DRX 9000 treatment. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Since receiving treatment, I have been pain free and feel ten years younger. Dr. Bellinger and Dr. Gill are friendly, professional, and a joy to work with.” - Tom.G Bloomfield, Connecticut
