Is My Pain in the Back or SI Joints?

What are the SI joints and what are they? The S and the I stand for Sacro-Iliac joints; where the pelvis meets the sacrum (or as many refer to it as the tailbone).

Most of us consider this the back as well. If you reach back with your hands above each butt cheek and feel a bony prominence or hard spot that is probably the SI joint. There is often a muscle trigger point around this area also. Usually just above, and you will notice the consistency is different plus it moves around.

I read something once on how your back doctor may check your spine but not the SI's, and something can go unnoticed? I suppose you can have a spot shot done with X-ray and not visualize the SI's.

At CT Spine we always check the SI joints as well. With any tests like an X-Ray, one must correlate with a physical examination!
