Dr. Oz Talks and Demonstrates the Chiropractic Adjustment

I am a big fan of Dr Oz. Why? Because he is not afraid to show his viewers different methods of pain relief. He doesn't just talk about medications, and surgeries. In this segment he demonstrates a misalignment in the spine, and the chiropractic adjustment. He also shows us what a herniated disc looks like. Also check out the "bird dog", a low back strengthening exercise for the lumbar spine that I show many of my patients. Check it out in the video below:

Transition Areas of the Spine, What Are They? and What is there Significance?

Transition areas of the spine are when one part of the spine changes to another. When your cervical spine transitions to the dorsal spine and your dorsal spine changes to your lumbar spine. These are the areas that often run into problems.

You may think "so what is the big deal" that your cervical spine now becomes the thoracic spine and then that becomes the lumbar spine. What is the difference? Well if you are really talking about the name change, that is not a big deal. The reason for the significance is the change in the direction of the spinal curvatures.

In the neck we have a "C" Curve the C open to the backs. Then in the dorsal or midback area the curve opens to the other direction. Then back to the posterior in the lower back. Its because of this direction change that puts additional stress at these areas.

Now this comes into play with the muscles too. Muscles are attached to the spine and work hand in hand with it, so you can imagine with a change in the spinal curvatures who have muscle group interaction that changes. Out of the spine also comes nerves or nerve roots from the spinal cord. Through muscle fibers travel nerves to where they need to go. This is why we refer to the neuromusculoskeletal as such an important focus in chiropractic.

Sometimes your back pain may be directly at one of these transitional areas. Your pain may also be located elsewhere but may be a result of this transitional area.Visit your chiropractors office right away if you are experiencing pain in your back. The sooner you have the pain addressed usually means the quicker your chiropractor can help you get rid of it.

Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications

Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications
A study published in the Annals of Internal medicine (Jan 2012 issue) reports that conservative care treatment such as chiropractic manipulation or home exercise is more effective than pain medications for acute and subacute neck pain. This was shown for short and longer time treatment periods. This was a 6 year study and involved adults aged 18-65 with non specific mechanical neck pain for a duration of 2-12 weeks. There were three treatment groups:

  • Group 1: Received chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy using diversified techniques including adjustments and mobilization
  • Group 2: Received home exercises. They were recommended mobilization exercises, neck retraction, lateral bending motions, and scapular retraction. Each exercise was to be performed 5-10 times.
  • Group 3: Received medications: NSAIDS, acetaminophen, and muscle relaxers

Findings:

At 12 weeks, a significantly higher proportion of Group 1 (that received chiropractic treatment)reported a decrease in pain by at least 50%. This was also seen with long term improvement as well.

Low Back Injuries- No One Is Immune

Low Back injuries: No more is immune
What I have learned in my now 10 years of being in practice is everyone is a little different. The same adjustment for everyone really doesn’t work. The reason: everyone has different injuries. There are also thousands of different misalignment patterns. Dr. Wendy Schauor, chiropractor, had a major injury to her back about 10 years ago. She tried a lot of treatments and therapies with minimal results. Then she learned about using kettle bells (ACA news Jan ‘12).

The point is, there is no harm in trying something. If there’s no possible back lash or side effects, like from jumping into taking medication or doing some kind of surgery, then give it a try! Ask your chiropractor, he/she may know a lot about it.

Neck Misalignments and Neck Arthritis

Forward head posture can be the cause of a lot of neck pain, headaches, stiff neck, and neck misalignments. We talked about how the load can shift forward out of position in a previous blog post. This magnifies the downward pressure of gravity making the neck support not just a 10 lb skull but can become like a 40 lb skull or even more. I’ve found the best defense is our cervical traction pillow.

In addition there, of course, are neck exercises, chiropractic adjustments, things to avoid, etc… that might help. Now that you have started 2012 life has become ever busier with a pillow, you lay on it, go to sleep, and don’t think about it.

That’s why the cervical traction pillow is great for helping to improve forward head posture. It works while you sleep. By helping to improve your cervical curve with its built in neck roll, it helps align your neck. This therefore reduces the forward head posture, putting less stress on the cervical spine. Keeping stress and pressure on the neck will increase or speed degeneration. Yep, you guessed it-Neck Arthritis. The pillow will also help correct other misalignments. The neck can be translated to the side also. I know people who sleep on two pillows on their side. This cranks your head sideways or if you roll to your back it’s crashing your neck forward. The traction pillow helps your neck spine level when you’re on your side. So don’t wait any longer the faster you do them, the better.

“Doc, can you Cure my Low Back Pain?”

I don’t like to use the “cure” word because you never know. Back pain comes from so many things, and it can go away and return, etc …

That being said, I’m sure we can help, possibly make the pain go away 100% or close to it. Using chiropractic care- chiropractic adjustments, muscle massage, and therapies we are able to align the spine, reduce inflammation, and pinpoint the cause of the pain. Aligning the spine and reducing inflammation takes pressure off of the nerves allowing the body to heal.

This works much better than a medication. A medication for your back pain either masks the pain (covers it up) or it may help reduce the inflammation, but not get rid of the true cause. This might be great for the short-term to get you through a couple days at work, but for the long-term when pain returns and returns again we are in trouble.

Your chiropractor helps with the root cause to help you get better for the long-term so back pain or neck pain don’t return again quickly.
