Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications

Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications
A study published in the Annals of Internal medicine (Jan 2012 issue) reports that conservative care treatment such as chiropractic manipulation or home exercise is more effective than pain medications for acute and subacute neck pain. This was shown for short and longer time treatment periods. This was a 6 year study and involved adults aged 18-65 with non specific mechanical neck pain for a duration of 2-12 weeks. There were three treatment groups:

  • Group 1: Received chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy using diversified techniques including adjustments and mobilization
  • Group 2: Received home exercises. They were recommended mobilization exercises, neck retraction, lateral bending motions, and scapular retraction. Each exercise was to be performed 5-10 times.
  • Group 3: Received medications: NSAIDS, acetaminophen, and muscle relaxers

Findings:

At 12 weeks, a significantly higher proportion of Group 1 (that received chiropractic treatment)reported a decrease in pain by at least 50%. This was also seen with long term improvement as well.

Unexpected Positive Side-Effects of Chiropractic Care and Spinal Decompression.

After chiropractic treatment we often have better posture, more energy and better range of motion
Most of us make our first visit to their chiropractor because of back pain or neck pain. After treatment not only is our back or neck pain better, but often we have better posture, more energy, and better flexibility. Seeing your chiropractor has also been shown to prevent colds, boost our immune system, and prevent spinal degeneration.

Take unwanted pressure off the nerves and the body will function at its best. This will get rid of pain but will also keep you healthy.

See your chiropractor for low back pain and neck pain, but also use him or her to maintain your health and prevent aches and pains. For more severe back pain or back and leg pain your chiropractor may recommend spinal decompression also.

CT Spine and Disc Center offers advanced chiropractic treatment and specializes in non surgical spinal decompression. How Does Chiropractic Care Help Put The Disc Back In Place?

Your chiropractor may use many different therapies and techniques to put the spine back in its best position. Aligning the spine helps the discs fall back in place.

Having the spine in its best position also increases the strength of your spine allowing it to better tolerate stress, strain, and simply gravity.

Making sure your spine is in normal alignment, most importantly, frees nerves from pressure. It gives the nerves adequate space between the vertebrae as well as allowing the body to work like it should. Down to even the cellular level your body processes nutrients, gets rid of waste, and functions 24/7.

Adjusting the spine (adjustments or manipulations) also helps mobilize the spine. This helps the body by allowing better blood flow and oxygenation of your system. Most often pain is due to internal inflammation putting pressure on nerves. Getting your body and spine moving allows for the inflammation to go away and allows oxygen and hydration in. Blood flow is important because cells created for healing can travel to the area of the body that needs repair and waste toxins can be pulled out.

At a neurological level, the nervous system can be more activated or the dysfunctional part can be reactivated) to balance your body's nervous system out. This may help restore immune system function so your body can heal as quickly as possible.

So at one level, putting your spine in its best alignment (orthopedic) will help the strength and function of the spine and discs. At another level (neurologic) it will help your body function better by activation your nervous system which is the main control center of the body.
