Across The Globe Drug Commercials Are Only Allowed in United States...

Maybe this has something to do with why we're the unhealthiest nation in the world.  Yep, that's right, out of all the developed nations for  health statistics, we are at the bottom again.  We actually continue to be at the bottom, which has been the case for years.

I had an idea because when we go to visit my wife's family in Canada, I noticed there are no pharmaceutical commercials on television.  That's when I really first realized this fact.

Here's another interesting fact I learned - when a drug commercial tells what the drug does, they have to mention the side effects.  If you see one of those commercials where there's just a couple on a beach holding hands and at the end you see "Cialis" come onto the screen, then they don't have to mention all the side effects.

Otherwise there's two and a half minutes of "...fatigue, bleeding out of your eyes, headache, diarrhea.... They are usually very scary, sometimes more so than the condition you're treating!

Transition Areas of the Spine, What Are They? and What is there Significance?

Transition areas of the spine are when one part of the spine changes to another. When your cervical spine transitions to the dorsal spine and your dorsal spine changes to your lumbar spine. These are the areas that often run into problems.

You may think "so what is the big deal" that your cervical spine now becomes the thoracic spine and then that becomes the lumbar spine. What is the difference? Well if you are really talking about the name change, that is not a big deal. The reason for the significance is the change in the direction of the spinal curvatures.

In the neck we have a "C" Curve the C open to the backs. Then in the dorsal or midback area the curve opens to the other direction. Then back to the posterior in the lower back. Its because of this direction change that puts additional stress at these areas.

Now this comes into play with the muscles too. Muscles are attached to the spine and work hand in hand with it, so you can imagine with a change in the spinal curvatures who have muscle group interaction that changes. Out of the spine also comes nerves or nerve roots from the spinal cord. Through muscle fibers travel nerves to where they need to go. This is why we refer to the neuromusculoskeletal as such an important focus in chiropractic.

Sometimes your back pain may be directly at one of these transitional areas. Your pain may also be located elsewhere but may be a result of this transitional area.Visit your chiropractors office right away if you are experiencing pain in your back. The sooner you have the pain addressed usually means the quicker your chiropractor can help you get rid of it.

Study Reveals Reveals 1/3 of Women go to the Chiropractor During Pregnancy

In the December 2010 Issue of JCCP (Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics)a study revealed that 1/3 of Women have chiropractic treatment during thier pregnancy.

The study found that 90% of these patients present with pelvic pain and about 30% picked their chiropractor as the first choice for treatment. Some other common symptoms are lower back pain, radicular pain (pain radiating to legs), mid-back pain, and infertility issues.

Speaking of pregnancy and the chiropractor; I have a friend who practices in Pennsylvania who recently helped one of his patients with her pregnancy. He let me know that this patient of his mentioned that she was trying to get pregnant for a long time, but was unsuccessful. A short time after getting her pelvis and lower back adjusted she got pregnant. He told me it could have been a multitude of factors, and the chiropractic adjustments may not have done anything for the pregnancy but they definitely helped fix her posture and relieve back pain. However, the fact of the matter is, she feels it was critical in her getting pregnant. And sometimes you can’t doubt a mother’s instinct!

The Benefit of Electrotherapy used in Conjunction with the Chiropractic Adjustment

At CT Spine and Disc Center, we use other therapies in addition to the chiropractic adjustment. Such therapies include vibration, moist heat, cold therapy and electrotherapy. Electrotherapy is often used to relieve pain and relax muscle spasms. Often times, the electrotherapy is used in conjunction with a hot or a cold pack.

Electrotherapy can be used in the “interferential” or “premodulated” form- both of which treat pain.

For muscle spasm reduction, a medium frequency wave length called “Russian stim” is often used.

Using electrotherapy involves applying pulsating electric currents to certain areas of the body, such as the low back, mid back, or neck via electrodes. This process elicits responses from nerves which are involved in pain sensation and muscle contraction information. The stimulation of sensory fibers will help block pain while stimulation of motor fibers will produce pulsatile contractions of the muscle groups innervated by the nerves being stimulated.

Electrotherapy is often used for:

  1. Chronic pain that does not go away
  2. acute pain
  3. relaxation of muscles
  4. increase of blood flow to the treatment area
  5. muscle re-education
  6. increasing range of motion
  7. prevention of atrophy of muscles

Electrotherapy can be used to relieve pain and muscle spasm without increasing inflammation or swelling. Also, no heat is produced when using electrotherapy.
