Steroid Injections For Your Back

When does someone typically get an injection for their back pain.  First, it's only considered when the pain is very severe, has been present for a long period, and the patient has tried other methods of pain relief with no help.

Here's an example: Sam presented to his chiropractor's office with left side sciatica.  His pain is exacerbated with sitting long periods.  He was prescribed muscle relaxers by his primary care physician and referred to physical therapy. This returned no help so he went to his chiropractor.

Here he had temporary relief of his symptoms but pain would return.  He was seen for 5 visits and then that doctor referred him for an injection.  Sam had consistent pain at some level, as well as inflammation.  While the chiropractic treatments helped, as well as the recommended home ice did seem to help, pain was still present.

The steroid shot is a big blast of anti-inflammatory to the specific area.  It is typically the inflammation that puts pressure on nerves causing the back pain or sciatica.  Doing this may give the body that extra chance to heal, thus allowing inflammation to stay away and normal motion return to the spine.

Across The Globe Drug Commercials Are Only Allowed in United States...

Maybe this has something to do with why we're the unhealthiest nation in the world.  Yep, that's right, out of all the developed nations for  health statistics, we are at the bottom again.  We actually continue to be at the bottom, which has been the case for years.

I had an idea because when we go to visit my wife's family in Canada, I noticed there are no pharmaceutical commercials on television.  That's when I really first realized this fact.

Here's another interesting fact I learned - when a drug commercial tells what the drug does, they have to mention the side effects.  If you see one of those commercials where there's just a couple on a beach holding hands and at the end you see "Cialis" come onto the screen, then they don't have to mention all the side effects.

Otherwise there's two and a half minutes of "...fatigue, bleeding out of your eyes, headache, diarrhea.... They are usually very scary, sometimes more so than the condition you're treating!

Tiger Woods and Back Surgery...

You may have heard that Tiger is back. He is going to be playing in a tournament at the Congressional Country Club, in Bethesda Maryland.  I actually thought he was nurturing a wounded knee.  Apparently he had back surgery.  He's had four surgeries on his left knee but this was a microdiscectomy (or microdecompression) in the low back.

What is a Microdiscectomy? That's where they shave off part of the disc that's causing pressure to the nerve.  This may be why you heard he had a pinched nerve.

With the best doctors and rehab, Tiger will be back for the next major PGA tournament. The scary thing is however the fact that you can have the best doctor but that doesn't mean a future free and clear of back pain.

Talk to the doctors at CT Spine & Disc Center to learn about a non-surgical approach to low back pain and/or disk pain.

Can my Leg Pain cause my Back Pain?...

Problems at the Bottom Affect What's
Going on at the Top !
Many times back pain can come from something lower down. Much like a tower is only as sturdy as its base, your back is similar. Essentially your feet and legs are your base. If you are standing a certain way or your gait (the way that you walk and stand up) is altered it will start to irritate the back. Everything is connected - your feet to your ankles, ankles to your knees, knees to your hips, hips to your back. Sturdy your base and it often will stabilize the back. By the way, I'm not just referring to the lower back but the middle back as well.

The same is true in the opposite direction.  I've seen patients where they start out with neck pain but it travels to the mid-back.  Here's the bottom line...If part of the body needs help or support, your body will pull resources from somewhere else.  While your gait, your posture, and your regular activities can often give you pain that works its way up, pain can work its way down to.  Another example is arthritis; your body pulls calcium out of bones to get it when it needs it...

My Back Hurts So I Sleep On The Couch

Sleeping on the couch once in awhile is okay but it's not something to make a habit of. It's one thing if you were evicted and your staying at your friends place but quite another if you have a cozy bed waiting for you. Plus, if you are sleeping on your friends couch because you were evicted you probably have bigger problems than low back pain.

Here's the thing, the couch really isn't made for sleeping all night, every night. The support just isn't there for the spine. Not to mention, you may not use your regular pillow. Your usual neck pillow doesn't fit on the couch or you are in such an awkward position your head doesn't rest properly on that pillow.

So not only are the back and neck often crooked on the couch, the living room is also not always conducive to sleep. There's light shining from the kitchen, glowing from the tv, the dog is all over you, etc, etc...

My MRI Shows Stenosis, What Can I Do?

Treating Spinal Stenosis for Pain Relief
with Non Surgical Spinal Decompression
What causes that stenosis? Usually, a disrupted disc, inflammation, and arthritis all combine to clog the neural foramen.

This, by the way, is called foraminal stenosis vs. central stenosis. You see the spinal cord extends from the brain down. Off to the sides out holes in the spine (neural foramen) come nerve roots that branch into smaller and smaller nerves that go all over the body.

By doing Spinal Decompression we open up those disc spaces and pull disc material back into place. This keeps disc spaces and the holes for the nerves open. Much like a flat tire, that disc will flatten and bulge outward. This automatically reduces the size of the space the nerve has to travel out of. When we pull the disc back in place it will open up those holes slightly. Also by pulling the disc back in place we mobilize the spine as well; this helps to let inflammation dissipate.

Doing the drx decompression we can help take away severe lower back pain, and keep it away. Call today to find out if you are a possible candidate for this treatment.

What Is The Difference Between An Adjustment And Manipulation?

Here's on example of an adjustment. An adjustment is a specific manipulation, moving a joint or vertebrae in a particular manner or direction. A manipulation is non-specific; an example would be cracking your knuckles. Chiropractic Doctors are the only ones doing Adjustments! A manipulation will feel good but specific adjustments work much better in the long run...

The Weekend Warrior

What is that?  This will typically describe a lot of us. This is the person who goes out on the weekend plays golf, goes skiing, you name it, without really warming up much because they're not used to it. During the week they typically are working at a shop or office where they are sitting for 10 hours. Most all of those hours are sitting.  I know because I know many patient's who tell me they hardly get up from the chair, or the computer desk, even drink water or anything. So the name weekend warrior fits a lot of people well because there's a big golf game to play on the weekend or they got invited to go for a big ski weekend. They go all out and for some things the body is essentially not ready.

So what tends to happen? Well those weekend warriors tend to get hurt or get injured. That's when they end up in our office with a back strain muscle spasm and pain or maybe something worse.

The first step with me seeing one of these patients is to diagnose them. So we do an exam, we talk to the patient so I know what's going on. Find out their level pain or what symptoms they are having to determine what it is.  Once we know what it is, then we can give treatment.

Treatment typically will involve spinal or extremity adjusts as well as therapies.  These therapies may be manual work by the doctor as well as other modalities.

What happened to my Back?

Often we may be fine and then all of a sudden - wham!!! Back Pain.
What happened? Here's the thing - you may think you've been fine but the back may have been misaligned for some time.

Back Pain Can Strike at the Worst Times...
Not all the nerves detect pain, in fact, most don't. This means you can have pressure on a nerve or nerves and not necessarily know it's there. Then, eventually as that pressure increases or more nerves are affected, you get pain.

So here you are: "I've been fine, healthy" "now I have pain". When in fact you haven't been; you've been out of alignment for some time...

A big help is to see you Chiropractor periodically, pain or no pain. Have your alignment checked on a more regular basis.

When Is The Last Time You Saw Your Chiropractor?

a simple solution to help back and neck pain: seeing the chiropractor
A simple solution to neck and back pain
The last time you saw your chiropractor was most likely when you had pain in your neck or back that wouldn't go away. You knew you messed your neck up one day at work and tried to tough it out for 3 days and hope the pain would go away on its own.

The question is; why torture yourself? Just get in to see the chiropractor!

You see, the quicker you get in usually means the faster we can fix an issue. Now that you have waited three days it may take three days to fully get rid of. Maybe not, but why take a chance. Plus, who wants to be in severe pain for 3 days.

Also, if you've been doing good, but it's been a long time since you've had chiropractic, it's a good idea to go. It's a great preventative measure for your health and to limit pain.

The Glastonbury Chiropractor is located in central Connecticut- CT Spine and Disc Center specializes in patients who suffer from sciatica, disc degeneration, bulging disc or herniated disc in the lumbar spine.
