"Why Can A Bad Disc Be Such A Problem?"

Really, the first question is what is a "bad disc"? We would be referring a disk that is causing a problem or that is not like the others and putting unwanted pressure on nerves.

It depends on where that nerve pressure is that tells us what symptom we're going to have such as pain, or maybe tingling and numbness, and and where that pain it is, and how severe it can be.

Also, because where the disc lies and correlation to where the nerves or nerve roots come out of the spine makes it common for a herniated, bulged, or degenerated disc, to cause some major nerve pressure.

The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Tiger Woods and Back Surgery...

You may have heard that Tiger is back. He is going to be playing in a tournament at the Congressional Country Club, in Bethesda Maryland.  I actually thought he was nurturing a wounded knee.  Apparently he had back surgery.  He's had four surgeries on his left knee but this was a microdiscectomy (or microdecompression) in the low back.

What is a Microdiscectomy? That's where they shave off part of the disc that's causing pressure to the nerve.  This may be why you heard he had a pinched nerve.

With the best doctors and rehab, Tiger will be back for the next major PGA tournament. The scary thing is however the fact that you can have the best doctor but that doesn't mean a future free and clear of back pain.

Talk to the doctors at CT Spine & Disc Center to learn about a non-surgical approach to low back pain and/or disk pain.

My MRI Shows Disc but I Don’t Have Pain?

Sometimes your MRI can show a disc bulge of herniation but there’s no pain because it’s not hitting a nerve.
  • It can be hitting a nerve area that doesn’t affect pain.
  • Like we said previously, it’s not hitting any nerves.

Here’s the bottom line- get checked because really those MRI findings need to be corrected with a physical exam and consultation. This is exactly what a doctor at CT Spine and Disc Center will be doing.

Too Much Salt? I Thought The Body Is Mainly Made of Salt Water?

You are correct. Here’s the deal – salt’s chemical name is NaCl – that’s sodium chloride. It’s about 40% sodium and 60% chloride. It’s that 40% that sort of gives salt the bad rap. The high sodium is what gives doctors their reason for concern. That high sodium that can be a contributor to things like heart disease stroke, and diabetes.

Here’s the good news – if you eat more natural fresh foods you’re mostly in the clear. What has been discovered however is that ¾ of the American diet may be from processed foods; these are often high in sodium. Canned goods, packaged items, junk food… Next time you pop open that bag of potato chips, think about what we just talked about.

This is why I wrote this blog. So many of us are so confused when we here on television or from someone else (who may have learned from a television commercial!), or from our doctors to cut our salt. It’s easy to understand, and intentions are good, but we are missing the complete picture. Really we need to cut the sodium. We need to cut the processed stuff.

On a side note: I like to drink a lot of water. One of the things I’ve learned is to actually add a pinch or two of salt because your body actually needs a certain amount of salt for proper nervous system function, for muscle contraction, and more. As you can imagine, the two previously listed items are pretty important.

For our disc pain patients especially, we often recommend increasing water intake. This will help hydrate the lumbar discs, and in combination with lumbar decompression and low back chiropractic treatment, helps us hault the back pain faster.

Back Pain When Standing …

Disc pain is often excrutiating...
"I have no pain when I lay down or sit, but if I stand more than five minutes the pain is unbearable, what can this be?"

This sounds like a disc issue. When pain is this severe and depends on position like this, it can often be a protruded disc. Similarly, a bulged or severely degenerated disc can give the same symptoms.

Often what happens is, in one position- in this case sitting or laying down- the muscles are relaxed and the inflammation is minimal. When this person changes position to a standing position the inflammation builds, in this case within about 5 minutes the pressure on the nerves is severe.

A disc injury like a herniation or protrusion can often put significant pressure on a nerve, hence severe pain. It also depends exactly where the protruded disc is. Depending on the level of the spine, the position of the herniation in relation to the nerves, and the size of the herniation can determine the severity of the pain or what kind of pain you have.

A positive note in this type of pain!... Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression helps significantly with protruded or herniated discs and you lay on your back with your legs supported. If you are experiencing this kind of back and leg pain, call our office for a consultation.

I Have A Disc In My Back That’s Completely Degenerated!

This may be true. Over time and depending on your health, and previous injuries to your back may cause that degenerative process to take place.

That being said, we rarely see a disc that is completely flat to the point that there is nothing left. This would be when the spinal vertebrae surrounding that disc are “bone-on-bone”. A doctor or therapist may say this sometimes, but it can be an exaggeration. The only true way to know is to look at your x-rays of the back.

You won’t see the actual discs on an x-ray, you need an MRI for that … but you will see the space where the disc belongs. If there is no space and the bones appear to be fusing together then that is complete degeneration.

Most people we can catch the breakdown before it gets to this point. The spinal decompression is the best thing for it because it pulls hydration or water into that hardened and flattened disc, helping to expand it to take pressure off of vital nerves.

Other things that may help as well to do this are low back exercises as well as seeing your chiropractor for low back manipulations and mobilization.

I Have A Tear In My Disc, What Does This Mean?

Most often times your doctor or your MRI report is referring to a tear of the Annulus Fibrosis. This is the outer layer of your disc.

This disc is made up of an outer fiber called the annulus. This is a cartilaginous material slightly more firm than the inner, more gel-like nucleus pulposis.

When the nucleus leaks out it’s referred to as a disc herniation or protruded disc. This usually creates significant nerve pressure and therefore pain.

We don’t always have to have a bulged disc or a herniated disc to have serious back pain.

You can also simply have a tear in the annulas fibers. The annulus has nerve fibers as well. Often times a tear of the annulus can cause a lot of pain.
Annular Tears In The Disc Can Cause Pain Whether There Is A Disc Protrusion Or Not!

With our discs there are a few types of injuries or conditions that cause pain or neurological symptoms. The conditions are disc protrusions (herniated discs), disc bulges, disc degeneration (flattening and bulging), and a disc tear. Nerve fibers in or around the disc get irritated from any one of these disc conditions and can result in serious back and/or leg pain.

Our Connecticut office uses advanced chiropractic techniques as well as DRX 9000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression to heal your spinal discs and end your back pain.
