Use Common Sense When It Comes To Your Health...

So, I’m on the phone with a neurologist in regards to a patient. I ask the neurologist if there are any natural alternatives or at least things she can be doing in addition to the medications in order to get better. The answer I got: “No, in fact, if I saw this patient a year ago I would have prescribed this medication.”

Now, that’s fine, if that is his honest and best decision to help the patient. However, after speaking with this patient’s primary doctor, he gave some health alternatives other than harsh medications, but suggested a neurologist because a neurologist would know more about this patient’s problem since it is more his specialty.

There’s good and bad doctors, there’s good and bad chiropractors, there’s good and bad contractors, you name it. This patient’s primary care doctor; overall great- good guy, pleasant to talk to, very knowledgeable, refers to other appropriate practitioners, and truly cares about helping his patients. My primary doctor, an osteopath actually, all the same- great doctor, great guy, etc …

That being said, sometimes you’ve got to find the great ones, and you may go through a few on the other end of the spectrum first.

My take home message: Use your gut, and your common sense. If something doesn’t feel right, or a recommendation just doesn’t sit right with you, consult with someone else!

- Benefits of Oxygen Therapy -

Oxygen therapy has been gaining alot of popularity lately. One way they do this is through a hyperbaric chamber, known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

Most big hospitals have been using it some time for severe burn victims, the bends, carbon monoxide poisoning, and a handful of other conditions.

Recently fox news explained how it's helping kids with autism. Chiropractic neurologists have been using oxygen to help a number of other conditions also. A lot of these conditions are neurologic in nature. The brain, our main control center, especially needs oxygen for its fuel. HBOT works extremely well as does something called an oxygen concentrator.

The key is getting more oxygen than we get with our normal everyday routine. The air we breathe we may get about 21% oxygen, whereas an oxygen concentrator we can get close to 85%, and with HBOT 100%.

Our Spinal Decompression History

At CT Spine & Disc Center in Glastonbury, CT we’ve been using this technology since February of 2006. What prompted us to get a decompression machine in our office was that a number of patients that came in for chiropractic just weren’t getting the results we wanted.

We knew we needed to find something else that would relieve their back pain, leg pain, or sciatic. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had some fantastic success stories using chiropractic care for these conditions. However, there were some patients that needed to continually be seen or that just didn’t get better. In most cases, these individuals had disc degeneration, bulging discs, or disc protrusion.

Skipping ahead now to 2011; Glastonbury Chiropractic is now CT Spine & Disc Center. Now, not only do we help neck pain or back pain, but also those severe cases of sciatica and disc pain. Chiropractors Dr. Gill and I (Dr. Bellinger) have been more than pleased with the results we have been getting. Adding DRX 9000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression to our chiropractic office has really helped us get nearly all of our patients pain free and back to health.

Occipital Neuralgia - Success with Chiropractic

Occipital Neuralgia can cause severe neck pain and headache-like pain. What happens is that pressure and inflammation around the back of the neck puts alot of pressure on nerves in that region; namely the occipital nerves.

Chiropractic neck adjustment helps to loosen the occipital muscles, cervical paraspinal muscles, and trapezius muscles in the back of the neck. Chiropractic treatment allows inflammation to dissipate and nerves to be free from pressure.

Your chiropractor can also help to correct postures like forward head carriage. This posture in particular contributes to pressure and tension in the back of the neck. When the head shifts forward, not only does it tension the spinal cord and nerves but it stretches the muscles in the posterior neck. Through all of the muscle fibers run nerves as well, so this adds to the nerve pressure and therefore pain.

In addition to the chiropractic adjustments the doctors also use muscle work, therapies like neck traction, and specific exercises to help spinal alignment stay corrected.

Treatments that Compliment Chiropractic

So many treatments go hand-in-hand with chiropractic therapy. Below I have listed a few that may help you get rid of your pain even faster than with just chiropractic alone.

1. Muscle Massage- All of the bones in the body are connected by a network of tendons, ligaments, and muscles. For the purpose of this report, when we say “muscle” we will be referring to muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Relaxing the muscles helps keep the body balanced and motion of the spine fluid.

2. Acupressure- In some ways it is similar to muscle massage because it helps break up trigger points allowing muscles to work normally. It really works like acupuncture, which is a great compliment to chiropractic treatment also. Acupuncture is used to balance the body meridians. Restoring the various systems of the body allows things to function at their best. Acupressure is applying pressure to those meridian points you would put the needle in for acupuncture.

3. Physical Therapy- Rehabilitative exercises or strengthening exercises help us build back strength to weaker areas of the body. This will also help to even out or balance out the body. Your physical therapist may be able to actually work directly with you to perform specific exercises and stretches to the areas most affected in your particular case.

At CT Spine & Disc Center we utilize various other treatments such as trigger point massage, back exercises, back stretches, decompression therapy, and traction in addition to various chiropractic techniques to help our patients receive fast and comfortable pain relief.

Can My Weight be Contributing to my Lower Back Pain?

extra weight contributes to bad posture
Quick answer: Yes! The bottom line is that a few extra pounds shouldn’t make a big difference, however, most people gain a significant amount of weight over time. I’ve seen patients who’ve injured themselves to the point where they weren’t exercising like normal and they started to gradually gain weight. I’ve seen people who experienced some kind of trauma and found themselves eating to cope. Also, as we get older, we often become less active.

Try strapping a 20 lb back pack to your back and wearing it all day; see if you can do it. Actually, better you don’t! I don’t want you to hurt your back. Not only will your back be sore, but you’ll be exhausted. These are symptoms you feel right away.

Over time, the increased pressure of the weight will literally start contributing to disc degeneration and joint breakdown.

Also, I’ve seen patients’ posture change because of the weight they’re carrying. I may see someone for a few visits for back pain. Then they leave the office feeling 100% only to come back one year later 25 lbs heavier and significant lumbar extension. This can especially happen when the majority of that weight is in the gut region. Some people tend to lean back or extend the lumbar spine to counter balance the weight. So, if that’s what your posture looks like you can now imagine even more stress and strain on the joints and the lumbar discs. Not only do you only have the increased weight of gravity on your back, but your spine is weaker because it’s out of position.

If your posture and spinal alignment has shifted and stayed that way for a period of time, loosing the weight may help, but may not be enough to restore it to normal. Consult with your local chiropractor to see how he or she may be able to help.

My Low Back Exercises Don’t Seem to Help my Pain …

Lower back exercises may or may not help in all cases. Most often we need a combination of things to get better. Exercises by themselves rarely do the trick.

Relieving nerve pressure is the real key. What we need to do this the quickest is chiropractic adjustments. Home therapies and medication may give us temporary relief.

The way that adjustments help the most is because they align the spine. This relieves nerve pressure and allows motion to be restored. This will then allow inflammation to dissipate.

So often I see patients who have been sent to physical therapy that get no help or sometimes get worse. You are essentially trying to exercise the problem away, which doesn’t usually work. We need to heal an area up before re-strengthening it.

This is especially true for acute patients where the injury was very recent. If your back pain is more chronic, meaning it’s been happening over a longer period of time, chances are the pain is not much from inflammation. Exercises at this stage will help. For acute pain cases you should start with therapies like electric stimulation and ice. Stretches and gentle chiropractic works well also. Exercise comes later on in care.

If you or someone you know has been suffering with back pain call our office to see if chiropractic may be the best solution for you.

Take Time Out for Yourself In 2011.. Happy New Year !

Well another busy Christmas season and New Years and passed and we begin the new year again with 2011. For many of my patients I noticed that there was a lot of running around, doing errands, stress from family functions, and making sure to get the perfect gift for the holiday season. It was also a time for clearing snow, shoveling, and dealing with the cold weather, and all that it brings.

Happy New year to all the patients of CT Spine and Disc Center. Make 2011 a year for good health without using medications and prescription drugs. Get out there and exercises- push yourself. Stretch before you exercise so you don't injury yourself. Get adjusted, exercise, and manage your stress as best as you can.

Happy New Year !

The Hips: A Key Factor in Back Pain!

When you lose motion in your hips it will cause your back and back muscles to work harder. It will also cause a change in your gait or the way you move. This, in turn, works its way into your lower back. Not only will this eventually strain or overwork muscles, but it will cause uneven wear and tear on your spine and lumbar discs.

There are some really easy ways to exercise the hip, keeping the joints loose and allowing the hip to move like it should.

First, try laying on your back, knees up- bring your knees out sideways and then back to the center. Repeat slowly for 10-20 repetitions. You can also do it standing, bringing your knees out and in, rolling your feet.

Another good stretch is to lay on your side allowing one leg to hang over the other. This will stretch the hips and the oblique muscles. You can do this lying on the edge of the bed so that your above leg can stretch and hang more.

I find that for a lot of our patients adjusting the hips along with the back helps to relieve their pain faster.
