What is the difference between Nerves and Nerve Roots?

The nerve roots are a bundle of nerves. Off the spinal cord comes nerve root that branch into nerves, that branch into smaller and smaller nerves.

When a disc puts pressure on a nerve, it is often a nerve root. When there's pressure nerve root there could be a number of symptoms associated with that.

There can also be pressure to a more distal individual nerve. Let's take an example. You have a herniated disc in the lower lumbar spine. This gives you back and leg pain all the way to the foot. Where as an individual who wore shoes that caused some foot pain, that pain is local to that area.

"Can Drinking More Water Help My Discs?"

Technically, drinking more water can help the discs for a couple reasons.

One way is that it helps hydrate the discs. When the discs are more fluid they can move better, they heal better, and they are better shock absorbers.

Number two, the hydration essentially gives more height to that disc which leaves more space for neves to come out.

And three, when you have water, think about the symbol for water - H2O - you're actually gaining oxygen as well which you also need to survive.

"I Think I Have A Bad Disk"?

It's very possible you have a disc that's causing you pain. There's basically a disc between each bone of the spine. So seven bones in neck. The neck is referred to as the cervical spine. There's 12 bones of the thoracic spine or dorsal spine; mid back. And there's five bones of lumbar spine or your low back. When you say "bad disc" you mean a disc problem.

A disc can cause a lot of pain because they often can put direct pressure on nerves or nerve roots.

"Why Can A Bad Disc Be Such A Problem?"

Really, the first question is what is a "bad disc"? We would be referring a disk that is causing a problem or that is not like the others and putting unwanted pressure on nerves.

It depends on where that nerve pressure is that tells us what symptom we're going to have such as pain, or maybe tingling and numbness, and and where that pain it is, and how severe it can be.

Also, because where the disc lies and correlation to where the nerves or nerve roots come out of the spine makes it common for a herniated, bulged, or degenerated disc, to cause some major nerve pressure.

How Can I Easily Combat My Back Pain?

There's a few simple things one can do at home.

The first one is diet - avoiding highly inflammatory foods is important but drinking a good amount liquid like water is also high on the list. Those discs in between each spinal bone have and need a large water content.

Next, is keeping the spine in alignment. A great way to do that is when you sit. Simply use a lower back posture cushion to keep that spine where it belongs. Seeing your Chiropractor can also make a big difference.

Lastly, stretch the muscles and keep Them loose. Remember all those muscles attach to bones and when things are really tight they will pull thing out of alignment this means no pressure this means no pressure and no pain.
