Fix Your Posture Already...!

I recently heard someone talking about posture. They actually set an alert on their phone to fix their posture. This is a great idea! I always talk about checking your posture periodically or taking breaks at work, or something similar. Basically this breaks you out of what you're doing and gets you to fix your posture. So I thought this idea was genius. Why not set an alert or alarm on our phone. Nowadays we all have one on us 24-7!

Get Your Spine Adjusted - Joe Does!

Back when the 49ers were winning all the time, including just a couple Super Bowls... I bet you didn't know, the team would get regularly adjusted by the Chiropractor. Now, you can imagine how a pro football player really needs to get adjusted but you don't need to play a pro sport to need adjustments. Anyway, I saw this commercial, and it reminded me of the 49ers going to the chiropractor.

It's so scary, every year we prescribe more medications, every year we have more prescription drug overdoses... "Ya know, people live longer" This may be true but it's quality of life that matters. So if I live a few extra years, great...but I don't want to live like  a vegetable!

Could this be Carpal Tunnel?

SYMPTOMS OF CARPAL TUNNEL?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is very plausible but is that really the problem? Here's a scenario: Someone visits our office because they are having tingling into their fingers - Their neighbor told them it's probably carpal tunnel. It may be? This person is on the computer all day at work so they're leaning toward what the neighbor said. This is why we do a thorough exam, to find out if that's really what it is.

From talking with the patient we learn that there is numbness and tingling in the whole arm. The patient also noted she strained her neck a bit the other day and is having neck pain to boot.

We do an exam and find that there is muscle spasm and tender points in the lower neck. Testing in the hand, wrist, and carpal tunnel reveals nothing of significance. We also had an x-ray study of the neck from last year when this particular person was in a minor accident and had neck pain. (This isn't always the case; a month prior we sent someone to the surgeon for him to take a look.)

In this particular case we learned that the arm numbness and tinglingwas coming from the neck. By the way, the x-ray from a year ago showed moderate degeneration or arthritis in the lower neck. When we have this it won't just disappear.

To shorten up the story, the patient began a course of gentle chiropractic and in office therapy. She no longer has these symptoms and completed her care.

If you are having similar symptoms please visit our Glastonbury Office before the problem gets worse.

Alzheimer’s May Be Linked To Low Fat Diets

For awhile there was a low fat, or non-fat diet craze.  In fact, there are still a lot of subscribers to this.  It makes sense right?  Take away fat from your diet, take away your fat!  Not at all true.  Junk food, highly processed food, and complex carbohydrates break down into sugar in the body and ultimately poorer health and a fatter waist line.

Most “healthy” people I know do not subscribe to this “low-fat” diet model.  You have to remember that there are good and bad fats.  Oil’s and fats they use for store bought cookies and fast food are typically “bad” fats, where fat from eggs and butter and fresh meat and fish are good.  The bottom line way to think of it is natural stuff = good and unnatural stuff= not good.

If it’s fake, stay away.  Oh, and don’t forget, your brain is made up of mostly fat...So don’t exclude it from your diet!  No wonder they are finally linking it to Alzheimer’s; there’s other nasty stuff you can link it to as well.

Can Stretching Help My Back Pain?

Stretching is a very important part of a good exercise routine. If not done properly however, it can lead to more pain. Research is telling us that instead of focusing on stretching before a work out we should focus more on a warm up. So in stead of that bend and try to touch your toes, try a light jog for a couple minutes. Then after your workout stretch, it'll feel better and will elongate the muscle.

Instead of a stretch try moving a bit: arm circles, trunk twisters, jogging in place and things of the like. So next time you go to stretch out that back, try a little warm-up first. One other tip is to take that hot shower to warm the muscles up a bit before any exercise.

Two Exercises to Prevent Low Back: The Bird Dog and Side Plank

In my last blog post I mentioned the importance of having a strong core. In the recent March April- issue of Web Md magazine, Dr. Michael Smith writes about how back pain can be prevented if one has a strong core. Specifically, he talks about two exercises that you can do.

  1. Bird Dog Exercise - For this exercise get on all four, and raise your right arm and left leg straight out and hold for 2 seconds. Slowly lower. Then raise your left arm and right leg and hold. Repeat this exercise 8-12 times.
  2. Side Plank- For this exercise, lie on the right side with your upper boy propped up on your elbow. Lift your hip off of the floor to form a straight line from head to toe. Hold for up to 20 seconds and lower. Repeat two times on each side.

Can Whiplash affect my Lower Back?

The Spine is Like a Kinetic Chain
Whiplash typically refers to the neck but it can affect the back. Let's just say you were hit from behind while in the car or maybe fell on your back. My first point is that your whole spine is connected. So if you did take the brunt of the whiplash to the neck you can guess it will work its way to the thoracic (mid back) spine or to the lumbar (low back). Second when you get hit from behind or "fall" on your back you can get direct trauma to that area as well.

Is My Right Leg Shorter Than My Left?

This is a fairly common question in the office, or, of course, the opposite. Is my left shorter than my right. There are two different things we look at:
  1. Anatomical leg length difference
  2. Leg length difference based on the pelvis
Anatomical difference we can’t change with adjustments, however, it may throw off other parts of the spine which can be corrected. This usually occurs due to an accident or injury when growing, and for some reason one leg didn’t grow like the other.

Mostly what we’ll see is a difference based on the low back and/or pelvis. If the spine shifts or the pelvis tilts on one side vs. the other it will make those leg lengths look different.

And guess what- everything in the body is connected so if the pelvis is tilted you better before it will throw off the back and vice versa.

That being said, the best thing is to get your back checked by the chiropractor.
