Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications

Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications
A study published in the Annals of Internal medicine (Jan 2012 issue) reports that conservative care treatment such as chiropractic manipulation or home exercise is more effective than pain medications for acute and subacute neck pain. This was shown for short and longer time treatment periods. This was a 6 year study and involved adults aged 18-65 with non specific mechanical neck pain for a duration of 2-12 weeks. There were three treatment groups:

  • Group 1: Received chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy using diversified techniques including adjustments and mobilization
  • Group 2: Received home exercises. They were recommended mobilization exercises, neck retraction, lateral bending motions, and scapular retraction. Each exercise was to be performed 5-10 times.
  • Group 3: Received medications: NSAIDS, acetaminophen, and muscle relaxers

Findings:

At 12 weeks, a significantly higher proportion of Group 1 (that received chiropractic treatment)reported a decrease in pain by at least 50%. This was also seen with long term improvement as well.

Keep up the good work getting the word out there Dr. I know we have been able to help many people in my office through releasing the innate ability of the body to heal itself. As NUCCA Chiropractors we believe that with even minor manipulations we can help people more than if they keep taking the pills. I love the posts, keep them going!

I was in physio therapy for 1 and a half years after a bad accident. This was in Germany and one of my therapists was an osteopath. I have always wondered what the different is between these two forms of manipulation are. Your thoughts?

if you have a back pain at the end of the day when working at a desk, then you definitively need to do some exercises for your back muscles. Also massage once a year is good. I would recommend to look for a chiropractor or massage specialist on www.360healer.com

Conservative care treatment and Medical treatment have advantages. The most important is they help people relief their body pains but still in a good way.
